Boy George
Whatever happened to the gender-bending Culture Club singer?

Born George O'Dowd in Kent in 1961.
In the late 1970s, George appeared became well known in the "New Romantic" club scene around London with his heavy make-up and extravagant dress sense.
After a brief spell, working as a DJ, Boy George got together with Jon Moss, Mikey Craig and Roy Hay to form the pop group Culture Club in 1981.
In late 1982, the band released the single "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" which went to number one in the UK.
Culture went on to have a string of top ten hits in the 80s including "Church Of The Poison Mind", "Karma Chameleon" and "Victims" and had hit albums with "Kissing To Be Clever" and "Colour By Numbers".
In the mid 1980s, Boy George was reported to be addicted to heroin and as Culture Club's success as a pop group began to decline, the band split up in 1986.
In 1987, Boy George released the single "Everything I Own" as a solo artist, which reached number one in the UK charts.

In 1989, George formed his own record label, More Protein, and formed a new band called Jesus Loves You who had two minor hits in the early 1990s.
In 1992, Boy George had a hit with the single "The Crying Game", from the film of the same name.
George went on to become a successful club DJ in the 1990s
and his autobiography "Take It Like A Man" was published in 1995 which detailed his secret relationship with Jon Moss, the Culture Club drummer.
In the late 1990s, Culture Club re-united to perform a number of live shows and in 1998 had a top ten hit with the single "I Just Wanna Be Loved".
In 2002, Boy George wrote the music and lyrics for and starred in the musical "Taboo", which ran for 15 months in the London's West End before moving to America, where it ran for 3 months on Broadway.
In October 2005, after reporting a burglary at his New York home, George was arrested and charged with possession of cocaine. He was fined $1000 and in 2006, he picked up garbage on the streets of New York as part of his community service.
George continues to perform regularly as a DJ.
